DWS Artist Member Signature-Level Process
Freqency: Jury process occurs in October and in April each year.
Eligibility: Associate members and non-members are eligible to apply for Artist member status in the Delaware Watercolor Society.
Number of Applicants
There is no limit on number of applicants who may participate in each jury session. There is no limit on the number of applicants who may be accepted during each jury session.
Subsmission Process
Each applicant will submit:

Four artworks completed within the last two years. All artwork must be original concepts developed by the submitting artist. Artwork produced using another’s photo references, or as a result of a workshop or class, is inadmissible. Artwork submissions may only be in the form of original work or a digital image of the original art.

Payment of a an entry fee of $20.00 per jury for members and $25.00 for non-members

No digitally created artwork may be submitted for consideration.
Responsibilities of the Signature-Level Coordinator
(Chairperson of the Signature Level Process)

Selects jury members whose collective expertise covers a cross section of genres and seeks jurors who are artist teachers and/or those skilled in critiquing art work as jurors. Each juror should be able to demonstrate a strong knowledge of aqueous media fundamentals, the ability to express their views clearly and demonstrate fair judgment.

Sends out applications, introductory letters and any other correspondence pertaining to the Signature process

Gathers the necessary documentation for the entries for each jury event.

Notifies applicants of the results of jury process

Conducts a juror orientation which is presented before each jury convenes

Keeps accurate records of jury process

Maintains absolute confidentiality of applicants and juror participants
Criteria Used Evaluating Entries During the Jury Process

Composition and Design - demonstrates a clear understanding of the principles and elements of design; choice of subject matter demonstrates a unique perspective, unusual choice of subject matter, or a new view of a traditional subject.

Use of color - demonstrates solid knowledge of color theory.

Creativity - shows creativity in presentation of subject matter and application of water media techniques.

Water Media Techniques - artwork displays evidence of in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of the medium.

Originality - displayed in concept and execution. The artwork cannot be derived from work or concept that belongs to another person, nor can it be a result of work from a class, workshop or other form of study.

Consistency in quality and style - all entries are of the same caliber and quality.

Overall Presentation of Artwork - framing and matting are appropriate to the artwork, are well executed, add to the overall look of the artwork, and meet professional framing standards. In the case of digital submissions of original artwork, the digital images are of professional quality and represent only the image of the artwork according to the entry specifications.
Juror Criteria

A juror must be a DWS member in good standing.

Each jury will consist of a 5-member panel; all members must be signature-level, Artist members of DWS.

After each jury meets, the following jury shall be made up of two jurors from the previous jury and three additional Artist members.
Requirements for Maintaining Artist Member Signature Status

Artist members must enter at least one DWS show per year and be active in the organization, participating in at least one volunteer activity each calendar year.

Artist members must maintain uninterrupted membership status. Failure to do so will result in loss of the signature status. Any loss of status requires re-establishing Artist member status through the jury process again.

Artist members pay dues of $30.00 by December 31st of each year.
