President’s Corner

I can’t believe that  Thanksgiving is soon approaching.  We have had a very busy last few months that included two juried shows and an art critique.

Things are slowing down somewhat now, although plein air types like me are still out there enjoying the last of these warm summerlike days.

I would like to thank everyone who helped with and participated in the shows at Nassau Valley Vineyards in Lewes and Grace Church in Wilmington.

As you know, we tried something new at Grace this year—electronic entries via CD.  This made the jurying process and review smoother, and although we did not receive as many entries this year, we had some very nice paintings represented.

The close timing of the two shows made it difficult for everyone to enter, but we wanted to make sure that we had juried shows this year and these were the only dates we could get.

Thanks for participating and congratulations to everyone!

Anne Crown-Cyr, President

Sunlight on Kitchen Window by Margaret Graham Kranking

Capturing the quality of light is the motivating force behind Kranking’s work, often reflecting the effects of sunlight on daily life whether in rural, city, or interior scenes, moments portrayed with heightened effects of color and contrast.

An enthusiastic outdoor painter, she has traveled the coast from Campobello Island, New Brunswick, to the Carolinas, as well as the terrain of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Some of her favorite places to paint are Georgetown, Charleston, Oxford and Annapolis.

Kranking is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, the Southern Watercolor Society, and the Washington Society of Landscape Painters, among others.  She is also listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.

She is an official United States Coast Guard Artist. She is published in a number of books and magazines, including American Artist and North Light and is represented by several galleries and her work is in such notable collections as Philip Morris, Marriot Corporation, Comsat, McDonald's Corporation, Bell Atlantic, Bel South, Texaco, and MCI Telecommunications.

We are very fortunate to have this wonderful and generous artist help us with our summer show.

Jean Uhl Spicer to juror the DWS Fall Show at Grace Church.

Jack White and Marv Reinhart have invited DWS to return to Grace Church in Wilmington again this year.  As many of you may recall, Grace was a very successful show.  We had good turnout for the opening  reception and many works were sold..

We are also very fortunate to have Philadelphia artist and national and international watercolor instructor, Jean Uhl Spicer, as juror and awards judge for our show at Grace Church.

Maize Harvest by Jean Uhl Spicer

Workshops

DWS worked with the Rehoboth Art League to bring well-known professional artists to our area.  Please take advantage of some of the following.

June 29 – Melissa Hackman will show you how to develop a creative, original sketchbook or journal.  Melissa has developed some absolutely beautiful books that journal her travels and art.  This is a must do.  One day only.

September 17-21 – Janet Walsh, president of the American Watercolor Society, will teach Expressive Florals in Plein Air.  Janet’s work is stunning.  This is a great opportunity to learn Janet’s approach to painting.

October 11-13 – Walt Bartman comes back to teach Painting on Location.  Walt paints in oil, pastel, and watercolor, so anyone should be able to get what they need from this wonderful class.

For more information on these and other workshops, contact RAL at (302) 227-8408.
